Australia has what it takes for success in 2022 September 02, 2010 Former Sydney Olympics Minister Michael Knight says Australia has all the right credentials to host a spectacular FIFA World Cup in 2022. Knight, who is back in the spotlight for the 10th anniversary celebrations of the 2000 Olympics, claims the Games and subsequent international events have proved Australia’s capabilities. ”Whether we get World Cup football in 2022 or not won’t be decided on whether FIFA thinks Australia can do a job – we have crossed that threshold,” he told Sydney’s Daily Telegraph. ”Having seen what Australia did with the Olympics, the Paralympics and the World Cup Rugby, no international sporting federation would have any doubts Australia could host an outstanding event. ”There’s no question we could run it properly.” Australia is vying to stage the 2022 World Cup but faces stiff competition from Japan, Qatar, South Korea and the USA. Knight said Sydney and the country as a whole could deliver to FIFA expectations, citing Australians’ love of sport, multicultural make-up, the quality of volunteers, enthusiasm for celebration and a good climate as key strengths. Knight served as Olympics Minister for five years before retiring from politics shortly after Sydney 2000 ended. He has not ruled out getting involved in organising a World Cup in Australia if the bid is successful. FIFA’s executive committee votes for the 2018 and 2022 hosts in Zurich on Dec. 2.
